HostGator Vs GoDaddy(Dec 2018)-Why Never Use GoDaddy?

HostGator Vs GoDaddy Comparison
HostGator Vs GoDaddy

Updated: December 1 , 2018

Going with the first company you see isn’t always a wise choice, which is why you should research a variety of web hosting companies to see which one can provide you with better service for what you want and need for your specific website.

This HostGator vs GoDaddy review will assist you in selecting between these two web hosting companies so that you choose the best one for your needs.

After using both the HostGator and the GoDaddy for a few months, we compared the two web hosting across eight categories on a 100-point scale. Based on our test, HostGator is now the one to beat in web hosting industry. Here’s why.

Performance(20 Points)

HostGator and GoDaddy both promise a high uptime of 99.99% each month.

HostGator uses Linux x86 CentOS 6 64-bit operating systems, while its servers run on Dual Xeon E5520 2.26 GHz Quad Core processors.

GoDaddy provides customers the choice of choosing between Linux and Windows OS before signing up. And their servers run on Intel Core i7 processors.

Recently, there have been many outages regarding the uptime of GoDaddy, which has caused many customers to become outraged and drop their service. I personally feel that they are still an excellent domain registrar, but don’t provide great quality when it comes to web hosting services.

1. HostGator Vs GoDaddy – Uptime Report (15 Points)

My team kept track of uptimes for both HostGator and GoDaddy for the last seven months using real time uptime tracking powered by Host-tracker

The result was a 99.99% uptime for HostGator and a below average uptime of <98% for GoDaddy.

Uptime of Sites Hosted on HostGator

Uptime of Sites Hosted on GoDaddy

To have a more precise understanding of HostGator’s uptime, we started tracking uptime of our personal blog hosted under HostGator and Godaddy

Here are the results…

HostGator performed exceptionally well, and scored an uptime of 99.99% or greater throughout the entire period of our testing, whereas Godaddy disappointed us with a downtime of more than 1 hour.

Godaddy vs HostGator Uptime
Godaddy was down for 2 hours, whereas HostGator was down for just 10 minutes during our 30-day testing.

Winner: HostGator – Both of my uptime tests show that HostGator scores consistent uptime of 99.99% throughout our testing period of one year.

2. HostGator Vs GoDaddy – Server Response time(15 Points)

We tested load time and server response time of websites hosted on HostGator and GoDaddy using Load Impact App.

Here are some of the steps taken to ensure that all tests were as fair as possible.

  • Each site has a WordPress 4 installation running on it, and features the same theme, the same number of images, page size, content and requests.
  • All the plugins and catching systems were disabled
  • The test was conducted several times and the best results are displayed here.
  • The host servers we tested are located in Chicago, IL, and Provo, UT, while the servers we used were located in Dallas, TX, and Ashburn, VA, respectively.

The Green Line indicates the number of visitors and blue line represent the adjacent response time as the traffic increase. The traffic was steadily increased from 1 to 50 visitors and the response time was noted.

Response time of sites hosted on HostGator

Hostgator response time
HostGator response time was around 400ms until it reached 75 concurrent visitors, after that load time started jumping too high.

HostGator’s server performance seems to be  solid, healthy and consistent. Only problem is that we don’t want to see a graph with lots of ups and down, flat lines are great for a hosting company. HostGator returned one the fastest response time of 400ms during this test.

Although, they were able to maintain this response time only until 75 concurrent visitors, which is not bad considering this webisite was hosted on a shared hosting server.

Response time of sites hosted on GoDaddy

Godaddy load impact response time
Godaddy recorded a response time of 1.2s, which is 3* HostGator’s response time.

Click here to have a look at the source and full test result from Load Impact for GoDaddy

GoDaddy started at an average server response time of 1.2s, but once the traffic passed 46 concurrent visitors, it started slowing down heavily and eventually the website stopped responding.

The server become completely unresponsive and the rejection list was very high. Moreover, the final result has high number of failed attempt.  GoDaddy fared well for lower traffic and completely fell apart once the traffic hit 46 mark.

Winner: HostGator – HostGator website loaded with an average response time of 400 ms  compared to GoDaddy which have an average over 1200ms.

3. HostGator vs Bluehost – Website Speed test(15 Points)

We conducted two test for understanding the speed of both these web hosting.

First test …

This tests use the concept of TTFB or Time to First Byte, it refers to how quickly the host’s server sends the first byte of data when responding to a request send by the browser of your visitor . This will determine the quality and speed of hosting servers.

Here are the result..

HostGator TTFB speed test result
HostGator TTFB was recorded at 0.377s. Anything under 0.4s is exceptional, and only few hosting companies manages to score that high. The load time of entire website is 1.5s
Godaddy TTFB speed test result
GoDaddy TTFB was recorder at 0.732s, almost double that of HostGator’s.  Moreover, the entire website was loaded in 4.0s, which is 3* HostGator’s load time.

Second test …

We performed a speed test from New York, Amsterdam and Melbourne to study their website speed from different continents.

For a better understanding, I have selected couple of website Hosted under HostGator and GoDaddy for testing their speed.

Note:-Both web pages are exactly same, i.e. they have same page size, design, request and images.

3.1 Speed of sites hosted on HostGator

HostGator showed great performace in Europe and USA, loaded a bit slower in Australia.

Testing LocationTest 1 Test 2Test 3
New York1.00.850.7
Amsterdam1.61.51.5
Melbourne2.21.712.0

3.2 Speed of sites hosted on GoDaddy

Godaddy load time is 2* higher than HostGator from all the tested locations.

Testing LocationTest 1 Test 2Test 3

Amsterdam2.72.11.9
Melbourne6.35.04.5

Winner: HostGator – Its very clear from these tests that HostGator servers are very fast and reliable.

Prices, Plans and Features (5 Points)

HostGator and GoDaddy are very much alike when it comes to their plans and prices. HostGator has three plans: Hatchling, Baby and Business.

GoDaddy features similar plans to HostGator, naming them: Economy, Deluxe and Unlimited. The Economy plan features a single domain and 100GB disk space; the other two plans come with unlimited disk space and domains.

The graph below shows the prices, and features of both company’s plans:

SiteGround vs FastComet |Dec 2018| A Comprehensive Comparison

If you don’t know whether to choose SiteGround or FastComet because you contrast the reviews you found and aren’t even sure what to compare them on, then you’ve come to the right place.

A lot of factors go into choosing a web hosting company, and considering the consequences of choosing a poor host, it’s no wonder that many people find the experience less than pleasant.

After all, if you choose the wrong host, you could end up with a website that is nothing more than a fancy digital paperweight. Your traffic will dwindle, and your business will suffer for it.

The good news is that I’m going to fix all that for you. The following is a comprehensive review of SiteGround vs FastComet that uses plain English and analyzes the most important factors.

You can also be sure that this review is completely impartial and objective. I’m not trying to get you to buy anything. I’m only interested in making sure that you work with the best host for your needs. So, I’ve tested both hosting companies and you can find the results below.

Also, be sure to check out my other hosting reviews and comparisons, such as SiteGround versus BlueHost, HostGator vs SiteGround, and HostGator vs BlueHost.

SiteGround was founded in 2004, whereas FastComet was founded in 2010 but only expanded into web hosting in 2013.

SiteGround vs FastComet: Performance, Reliability and Speed Test

Siteground has taken a highly innovative approach to web hosting, and over the years has been at the forefront of offering top-quality services and hardware.

Thus, they have their own SuperCacher, they offer free CDN by Cloudfare, they use SSD drives, and NGINX web server tech, all in an effort to ensure that their customers are provided with outstanding performance. It should be noted that FastComet has similar options, including SSD-only servers.

Not many companies offer SSD-only servers due to the higher costs of these drives. However, they are certainly more reliable and faster than HDDs, which is why your best option is to go with a company that relies on SSDs.

SiteGround vs FastComet: Uptime Test

Like most web hosting companies, SiteGround and FastComet both offer a guaranteed 99.99% uptime. However, you can’t always rely on guarantees, which is why we went ahead and tested both companies.

SiteGround’s uptime was on par with their guarantee, meaning that they achieved an uptime of 99.99% over the past year. As far as we’ve seen, they have some of the most reliable servers in the industry and rarely disappoint.SiteGround Uptime report

By comparison, FastComet achieved an uptime of 99.98% with only three outages. While this indicates FastComet’s servers are quite reliable, SiteGround still offers slightly better performance.

Fastcomet Uptime report

If you want to get a better idea of how well the two companies performed, you can enter different data points into the following graph to see the uptime of FastComet vs SiteGround in different situations.

★ Winner Tie.

SiteGround vs FastComet: Server Response Time

We test server response time because it will provide us with an indication of how good the servers are, but also to see how quickly your website will load. The latter is an essential metric in choosing a good host.

The test was conducted using identical websites to ensure it was fair. Thus, the sites featured WordPress installations and used the same themes, the same number of images, as well as identical page sizes, content, and requests. All plugins and caching systems were disabled.

In the graphs below, the blue line represents the number of individual users, while the green line represents server response time.

SiteGround definitely impressed us with their average response time of 515 ms, which was relatively stable all the way up to 99 concurrent users.

SiteGround-cloud-speed-test

On the other hand, FastComet’s results were less than impressive. Up to about 25 concurrent users, their servers had an impressive response time of 471 ms.

Fastcomet load impact server response time

Subsequently, though, the response time slowed down until it got to 36 seconds, and that was at only 40 concurrent users. We didn’t bother throwing more users at them because we were worried we’d end up waiting the whole day for a page to load.Fastcomet load impact response time at 40VUS

Clearly, in terms of server response time, SiteGround wins hands down.

In defense of Fastcomet, while having a lot of concurrent connections is good, most customers will likely hit another resource limit even before they can hit those high concurrent users count depending on their website’s structure. If your website will receive only up to 50 visitors at a time, Fastcomet is as fast as SiteGround.

We also need to consider the fact that Fastcomet is very cheap compared to SiteGround. So Fastcomet is not bad after all if your requirement is not so high.

★ Winner SiteGround.

Prices, Plan, and Features

SiteGround offers a number of plans for every budget. Whether you’re looking to host a single, small website or require space for a larger website with heavy traffic, SiteGround has a plan for you.

The StartUp plan available at $3.95, for example, is designed for a basic website or average-sized blog with less than 10,000 unique visits per month. It includes a free website builder, 24/7 technical support, SSD storage, a free CMS install, free auto daily backups, unlimited emails accounts, free Cloudflare CDN and more.

The GrowBig plan, available at $6.45 per month allows you to host unlimited websites. It’s designed to provide the best performance for either a single website with slightly heavier traffic or multiple sites with average levels of traffic.

The GoGeek plan features separate instances so that customers can share fewer resources on the same server, ensuring better performance. It’s a plan that’s designed for larger websites or average-sized ecommerce sites.

FastComet’s plans appear to be slightly cheaper than SiteGround’s offer but, like the latter, they also offer a range of plans that meet any needs.

The StartSmart plan is the smallest of the bunch and comes with a free domain for life, 15GB of SSD space and unmetered traffic. You can only host one website. Other services and features seem to be on par with SiteGround, except that it’s $2.95 per month.

ScaleRight allows for multiple websites and features 25GB of SSD space, while also including all the features of the StartSmart plan. It also comes with 3 free website transfers, a free private DNS, 1-Click Restore Manager, double the CPU and RAM, unlimited addon domains and more. This is all available at $5.95.

The SpeedUp plan offers 35GB of SSD space plus all the features provided by the other plans. It also comes with 3 times the CPU power and RAM, 3 times fewer clients per server, APC and Opcode cache and much more. This plan is available at $9.95 per month.

SiteGround vs FastComet: Customer Support

Quality customer support is vital so we took the time to test both companies. Thus, the results of our FastComet vs SiteGround customer support test are as follows:

SiteGround clearly cares about their customers because they offer a number of ways for you to get the support that you need.

Thus, they offer a 24/7/365-day live chat, the ticking things system, as well as a toll number.

The wait time for their live chat is less than 5 seconds, whereas you can expect a response within 10 minutes on the ticketing system. As a reference point, I’ve waited as long as 5 minutes on other live chat systems.SiteGround-support-waiting-time-min

They also have a feature that allows you to see the bio of every support rep, which includes user ratings, work experience, and skill set.

FastComet also boasts 24/7 support but they only offer live chat and a ticketing system. Their live chat system is effective and their representatives are knowledgeable and eager to help. It only took three minutes for them to solve a problem for me.

Fastcomet live chat started time

Fastcomet live chat ended time

The ticketing system also delivered excellent results as it took them only 9 minutes to answer my question. For a ticketing system, that is quite impressive.Fastcomet support ticket reliability

Based on customer support, FastComet wins in terms of response time, but only by a slight margin.

★ Winner Tie.

SiteGround vs FastComet: User Interface

Both SiteGround and FastComet offer cPanel, but FastComet also includes Softaculous. As cPanel is the most popular user interface around – and the easiest to use – it’s a great option for newbies and veterans alike.

SiteGround cPanel: Try Demo

Fastcomet UA InterfaceFastcomet control panel

Both companies offer a wide range of one-click installers for some of the most popular scripts, including Joomla, WordPress, and Weebly.

★ Winner Tie.

FastComet vs SiteGround: User Reviews

Based on their Tweets, SiteGround users are extremely happy with the company. Not only are they more than pleased with the quality of the service, but people are extremely ecstatic with the customer support team. Users repeatedly call the service fantastic and state that their support is unparalleled.

Of course, there are some displeased customers, but that tends to be the exception rather than the rule. After all, no service can be absolutely perfect and it certainly can’t make everyone happy.

For more opinions, check out the live tweets below:

FastComet also seems to have quite a few positive user reviews, especially in terms of the service they offer. However, there were some disgruntled users in terms of the effectiveness of their customer support.

FastComet vs SiteGround: Free Website Migration

Both companies offer free website migration, but it’s not enough to offer it as a service. They also have to know what they’re doing. And if it takes them a month to get around to it, it’s pretty much a waste of time.

I tested SiteGround’s migration service. Their team was able to transfer my website with absolutely no issues within 24 hours, despite the fact that it was a weekend. That is truly impressive service.SiteGround-Migration-feature

Well, we thought so until I initiated a transfer request with FastComet. They did it in approximately 45 minutes, despite the fact that I initiated the request at 11 PM on a Friday night. And it only took them two minutes to reply to my request, which is even more impressive.

Fastcomet website transfer

In this situation, FastComet wins hands down because the speed of migration was ridiculously fast.

★ Winner Tie.

SiteGround vs FastComet: Renewal

We all know that some companies practice higher renewal charges, which can often come as a surprise. Unfortuantely, SiteGround is in the habit of charging a higher rate when you renew your plan with them.

SiteGround renewal price

Conversely, FastComet’s prices remain unchanged, so you won’t be paying extra when you renew.

Siteground VS Fastcomet price

★ Winner Fastcomet.

SiteGround vs FastComet: Final Analysis

In terms of support, uptime, and the interface on offer, FastComet and SiteGround are on equal footing. However, SiteGround offers better speed and reliability, whereas FastComet’s renewal price and site migration service is better.

Overall, though, SiteGround is a better choice simply because we cannot stress enough the importance of speed and reliability. After all, you could put up with a lot of things, but the one thing you should never put up with is less than stellar reliability and speed because, otherwise, your traffic will suffer, which means your business will suffer too.

However, Fastcomet is still good and offers great performance and features for a better price than SiteGround. If you are on a tight budget, Fastcomet is better and more affordable than SiteGround.

WP Engine Vs HostGator – Which One Is Right For You?

Updated: May 3 , 2018

Choosing the right web hosting service is an important step in the success of your new website. The negative consequences of selecting the wrong service include loss of income, negative SEO rankings, and the constant fear of malware and security attacks on your important data.

Today, WP Engine vs HostGator review will be looking at two popular web hosting companies and determine which one is the best choice. The two companies are WP Engine and HostGator:

  • WP Engine is a popular premium web hosting service that concentrates solely on the WordPress platform. If you are not familiar with WordPress, consider that it is the software that runs 18% of the world’s websites and blogs.
  • HostGator is a company that offers shared, VPS, reseller and dedicated web hosting options. Started in 2002 by Brent Oxley in his dorm room at Florida Atlantic University, it is now headquartered in Houston with more than 7000 servers in its employ. The company was recently acquired by Endurance International which also runs other web hosting companies such as HostMonster and BlueHost.

 HostGator Vs WpEngine –Uptime Report

“Uptime” is a web hosting term that refers to the amount of uninterrupted service a web hosting company provides their clients. When web hosts are down, the service may have been interrupted due to a myriad of possible situations including maintenance, security attacks, technical problems, and power outages. Of course, as a customer you want a company with a strong uptime percentage.

Along those lines, WP Engine has one of the best uptime percentages in the industry. At 99.99%, they have an envious uptime record which few companies can match. They are able to achieve such an impressive number due to a combination of an advanced caching system and a worldwide system of international servers. Likewise, HostGator also enjoys a 99.99% uptime record. They guarantee this percentage for shared and reseller hosting customers. For VPS and dedicated server customers, they offer a similar but separate Network Guarantee. Here are their respective results for a typical six-month time:

  • Average 6-month uptime for WP Engine (tested for 10 sites based in different parts of the world): 99.99%. That means your site would possibly be down almost 4.4 hours over 6 months of service.
  • Average last 6 month uptime for HostGator tested for 10 sites based in different parts of the world: 99.99%. There were many months when they were successful in providing 100% uptime, which is quite amazing for any web host.

You can plug-in various details in the following interactive graph to examine various outcomes. These graph demonstrate uptime of around 150 websites hosted under these hosting companies.

Have a look at the uptime report of this website InlineHostBlogger.com, Which runs on HostGator web hosting. There were minimal duration of downtime during this month.

WP Engine and HostGator have similar uptime percentages. The difference between the two companies will become more apparent in the following sections as we more closely examine website speed, customer service and server response.

Speed Test

Recently, Bing did a study where they examined the impact of a slight delay in site speed. They slowed test websites down by only 1.5 seconds and the results were dramatic. There was anywhere from 3.8% to 4.4% reduction in:

  • Revenue per User
  • Click Count
  • Satisfied Users

Clearly speed is an important component of good websites. Slow sites can rob you of new customers and added revenue. WP Engine maximizes the speed of their client websites by continually reviewing and tweaking the database management of WordPress including the library of plug-ins used to extend the core software.

HostGator relies on their massive amount of server arrays to deliver good website speed numbers. Here are the specifics:

  • Average speed of website running with WP Engine (Optimized 10 sites): 1.3 seconds.
  • Average speed of website running with HostGator (Optimized 10 sites): 1.25 seconds.

In addition, both WP Engine and HostGator are some of the best web hosting services for providing traffic outside the United States. Because they both have strong international data centers around the world, they can provide speedy service in many locales.

When we tested the seed of wpengine.com and HostGator.com, it was a even match where both website loaded in a quick time.

WP-Engine Vs HostGator – Server Response Time

Server response time” is an industry phrase which refers to the amount of time it takes for a server to organize all the various parts of a webpage. When a web user clicks on a website, this site sends a request to the server to send all of the images, themes, videos, graphics, text and other assorted elements and then assembles them for the user to read as it was designed to be presented.

Server response time is highly influenced by both the number of servers and the distribution of servers and their quality. WP Engine is a young company that was able to invest in the latest technology in servers. As a result, they can provide exceptional server response time.

At the other end of the spectrum, HostGator relies on their sheer size to create the necessary capacity to deliver fast server response times for a large number of clients.

This is a breakdown of the server response times for both HostGator and WP Engine:

  • Average server response time of WP Engine for last 6 months (10 Optimized sites):  200 ms.
  • Average server response time of HostGator for last 6 months (Same 10 Optimized sites):  190 ms.

As you can see, both companies are very close in terms of server response times. HostGator has the lead in this study.

Next you’ll find an interactive graph that you can use to evaluate various date ranges and the corresponding response times for each company.

Wpengine Vs HostGator – Benchmark Test

For each web hosts, I’ve identified a set of 10 websites all hosted on different web servers. A total of 825 requests were then sent to each host in order to measure the performance of their servers.

HostGator Wp Engine
Completed Requests 825 825
Failed Requests 7 3
Requests per sec. 6.26 6.46
Time per request 157.09 ms 165.09 ms
Average transfer rate 63.83 Kbytes/sec 61.8 Kbytes/sec
Median connect time 12.6 msec 12.8 msec
Median processing time 142.49 msec msec 144.49 msec
Median waiting time 135.71 msec 145.77 msec

Again, HostGator has the lead over WP Engine in this category as well. This table clearly displays that HostGator has fewer failed requests, a faster average transfer rate, and edges out WP Engine in median connect, processing and waiting times.

Winner:  HostGator – HostGator’s sheer size and international presence along with their continuing investment in state-of-the-art technology has allowed them to edge out WP Engine in our performance matchup.

Prices, Plans And Features

WP Engine has four hosting plans: they are named the Enterprise, Business, Professional and Personal plans. Personal plans are oriented toward individual bloggers, micro-businesses and startups with small staffs. The Professional level is geared toward more established businesses and companies that have been able to establish themselves in the marketplace. The Business level is for big businesses and corporations, educational institutions and organizations. The Enterprise level is for larger corporations, international organizations and governmental agencies.

As mentioned, HostGator offers shared, VPS, reseller and dedicated server hosting. The most economical way to start a new website for a growing concern is shared hosting. That means that you share a server with potentially thousands of other websites. Reseller hosting is really for entrepreneurs that want to resell HostGator services as part of their own business offerings. VPS and dedicated servers are for larger organizations that need tighter security and fine-grained control over the maintenance of their servers.

Steps to High Performance

WP Engine has a smaller number of clients than many other services. Because of their focus on a single platform, WordPress, and their smaller size they have been able to take the time to build a solid, robust system of international servers.

Several large events, including a music festival and a popular American television music show severely tested their server quality and durability by sending millions of visitors over a short period of time. WP Engine’s servers handled both events admirably.

HostGator has state-of-the-art data centers in both Houston, Texas and Provo, Utah. They have taken care to purchase the best electrical, network and HVAC technology available to support these facilities. In Houston, they have over 300,000 square feet of redundant systems designed to “pick up the ball” in case any server goes down at any time. In Provo, they have 750 kW battery backups, diesel generators, and dual segregated transformers which all contribute to their enviable uptime percentage record.

Customer Support

WP Engine is able to point to multiple testimonials by satisfied customers that tout the company’s speed, stability and support. One customer stated that their page load dropped to below 1 second, and became even faster once they added a content delivery network (CDN). Another mentioned the solid security they receive from WP Engine as opposed to their previous host where they were hacked not once but twice. These testimonials are good examples of the loyal following WP Engine has developed over the last several years by providing outstanding customer support.

HostGator has a myriad of support options:

  • Knowledge base with over 200 articles dealing with different technical issues.
  • Hosting forum with more than 20,000 members offering advice and guidance.
  • Chat support which is ideal for fast answers to simple questions.(Not Usually as Fast as it used to be)
  • E-mail support is available at support@HostGator.com. Issues are immediately put into the support queue, and confirmation e-mails are sent to users.
  • Phone support is also available for basic issues and simple questions. Highly technical problems are issued a support ticket.

Winner :- Tie

Last Two Years

WP Engine has grown rapidly and yet continued to innovate in their web hosting technologies. Recently, they introduced a new WordPress platform that was partially inspired by the technologists at Facebook. While it is still in the beginning stages, the platform called Mercury promises incredible speeds for WordPress websites.

HostGator has met the challenge of keeping their vast array of servers up-to-date and competitive. In Houston alone, they cool their servers with 70 ton CRAH units and 70,000 gallons of available on-site water tanks. They have early-morning smoke detection services and a 500 year floodplain. In Provo, they have 60 ton cooling units providing over 700 tons of capacity. All of this cooling and backup technology demonstrates their huge investment in maintaining their enviable uptimes and server speed.

Control Panel

Early versions of the WP Engine control panel were found lacking by various customers. It was “Plain Jane” and didn’t offer the same look and feel of some of the more popular control panels like cPanel and Plesk. While the control panel is still focused on functionality, recent updates have made it more user-friendly and graphically appealing.

HostGator offers a number of control panels depending on the plan you choose. For example, shared hosting plans use cPanel, while reseller plans use the WHM control panel. VPS setups on Windows Shared, Windows Dedicated (and VPS with Plesk) plans all use Plesk.

HostGator Vs WP-Engine – My Recommendation

Talk about a tight horserace! Comparing these two web hosting services is like watching two world champion boxers go at it for 10 rounds. However, after breaking down all of the details of each service in terms of speed, support and server response, I recommend HostGator over WP Engine.

What put me over the top was when I realized that they were able to deliver 100% uptime response for several months during my monitoring. This is a rare and enviable achievement. It speaks volumes about HostGator’s commitment to excellence. The company has worked hard to overcome some support delays in their chat system and other challenges.
